Honey for Health

Honey is highly recommended by both conventional and holistic vets for the treatment of tracheobronchitis. Honey soothes the throat. One of the most expensive honeys sold in the United States and around the world is Manuka honey from New Zealand. Twenty years of research show that manuka honey has impressive antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antiseptic anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. While all honeys share these properties, they are especially pronounced in manuka honey. Locally we've been able to find this honey at For The Health of It in Blue Mountain Beach. We carry tupelo honey in the store, which is also excellent. For most dogs 1/2 to 1 teaspoon four times a day works well. It can be fed from a spoon, mixed with powdered herbs, or added to herbal teas that double as cough syrups.

Flea Facts

Besides being annoying and potentially embarrassing (no one wants dinner guests scratching their ankles), fleas can cause big problems and spread diseases…to you and your pet. Because they feed on blood, they can transfer disease easily. Besides the risk of disease, fleas can also cause other serious health issues for your pet.

Here are just a few of the hazards fleas pose.

Anemia. Because fleas are small, you might think they couldn’t possibly ingest enough blood to cause anemia in your cat or dog. However, when a large population of fleas is on your pet or in your home or yard, this is a real danger, especially for smaller breeds. Look for general weakness, pale gums, decreased appetite and weight loss to spot anemia.

Skin irritation and infection. Flea bites itch, as we all know. Repeatedly scratching in one area will eventually damage and possibly break your pet’s skin. When this happens, inflammation and infection can set it. While specially formulated shampoos can soothe roughed-up, scratched skin and antibiotic creams can help heal open wounds, keeping the source of the problem at bay is best.

Tapeworms. Fleas can carry tapeworms, infecting host animals. If an animal eats a flea that is infected with tapeworm larvae, they can easily contract tapeworms. Don’t think your furry friend would have such dismal dining habits? Think again. Some pets eat 50-90% of the fleas on their bodies. Ugh.

Tularemia. This disease is caused by bacteria and spread by fleas and ticks. Watch out for the symptoms – fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. This disease is spread by fleas and ticks. It is potentially fatal and infects both dogs and humans. It presents much the same symptoms as tularemia, but is often accompanied by vomiting and a rash around the wrists and ankles.

Q Fever. This is carried primarily by rat fleas. It usually infects humans, but can infect some domestic animals. Just another nasty potential side effect of having fleas.

Treating your pet for fleas, or better yet, preventing flea infestation altogether is especially important during the flea season, which in some areas of the country can be year-round. There are many options to treat your home for these pests as well. Talk to your veterinarian about what actions you should be taking to prevent or treat flea and tick infestations.
